PL-259 UHF CONNECTOR

Most everyone has their technique for installing a PL-259.  This is mine.  The coax being used is LMR-400.  It doesn't get much better than that. This procedure is easy and once you've done it, you will develop your own style.

1. Use a tubing cutter.  Cut outer jacket 2" from the end.  Do not cut the braid.   Take your time and pay close attention.

2. Use a knife to slice the edge and remove the jacket.  The jacket can not be removed without removing the edge.

3. Tin the braid with solder.  Use a soldering gun, not an iron.  The braid needs to be completely coated with solder.

4. Again, using the tubing cutter, cut through the tinned braid to the center conductor.  Leave 3/8" remaining.  Twist and pull and remove the cut portion.

5. The tinned braid and the tubing cutter provides a clean cut and end, preventing shorts.

6. Place the plug cover over the coax.  Gently insert the center conductor into the plug and hand tighten.  With pliars, turn the plug on to the coax until the solder holes are covered with the tinned braid.  Solder all four holes and the center conductor.  Remove excess center conductor.  Always test with a VOM before connecting to a transmitter.
