Nearly a century ago, KJQ became America's 24th radio station and was licensed to Stockton, California. KJQ is one of the first 100 radio stations licensed in the United States. On December 20, 1921, Clarence O. Gould was the license holder for the radio station and also operated “Gould, The Light Store”, both occupying space at 615 East Main Street, telephone #383.Gould sold radio sets, appliances, electric fixtures and gas/gasoline lights.
KJQ operated on an assigned frequency of 833KC with an output power of 100 watts and could be heard from a distance of 75-100 miles.During its final months of operation, the station was reassigned to a frequency of 1100KC.Station manager and on air personality, D.W. Horstmeyer, aired news and music each week day from 5:00-5:30 PM, music on Wednesday and Sunday from 10:00-11:00 AM and church services on Sunday.Popular music genres during this era were orchestral, dance orchestra, popular instrumental and jazz.
In April of 1925, KJQ’s license was deleted from the roster of radio stations, with its successor, KWG remaining on the air to this date.

KJQ began as one of two licensed radio station located in Stockton, California, in 1921. Since then, I adopted the long forgotten call sign for use in many applications, including the call for my LPFM radio station as provided for by FCC, Part 15 rules and regulations. For the techs, this is 250mv @ three meters.
Although the station is amateur, the studio is complete with professional broadcast standard equipment.
Programming consists of the Top 40 genre, covering the mid 1940's through the mid 1980's. KJQ does not advertise, but will air vintage commercials once heard on AM radio. It's also common to hear PSA's promoting the Second Amendment Right to keep and bear arms.
The station can function through automated computer programming, or the sound of vintage vinyl can be heard from a library of approximately 50,000 records. Music selections are made from racks of 7" 45's, 12" LP's, 10" 78's and 16" transcriptions. This is a collection assembled over 50 years.
With the flood of used radio broadcast equipment on Ebay, you too can build a station of your own and have loads of fun.
The original thought was to stream KJQ, but through research, it is determined that streaming is cost prohibitive. In order to stream music, it takes $$ to host the stream, then more $$ for each extending hand of RIAA, BMI, ASCAP, SESAC and the list goes on. Having fun isn't legal anymore.
