These are detailed pictures of the Collins 12-S broadcast transcription turntable listed for sale on Ebay. There are bids on this turntable and it will sell. It's extremely rare to find one that is in excellent condition.
The turntable IS NOT resting directly on the rocks shown.
Most sellers of broadcast turntables don't have the time/knowledge and desire to take a classic piece and make it the way it was when it was new. There isn't much to it, but I do know broadcast turntables and make every attempt to bring them back to original condition. Once the mechanical devices are in good order, the last and most impressive part is the felt. Cutting a perfect sharp circle, using high quality felt, is most important for cosmetics. Scissors don't get it at all. Taking the time and effort to polish the platter also makes for good looks. It doesn't work any better, but it sure looks good. A serious turntable user wants something that looks and works great. Parts for most broadcast turntables are still available at www.russcoturntables.com, including this one.
The most common problems arrise from worn out, but easy to obtain, parts such as motor shock mounts and the idler wheel. If not abused, most everything else will last a lifetime. The only action that will damage the idler wheel is to leave the speed selector engaged when not in use. Pressure of the motor capstan will create a dent in the idler wheel if not in motion. Age will eventually degrade the rubber shock mounts, but that's an easy repair.
Like a vehicle, if you don't use it and neglect to lubricate friction points, trouble is in the future. Keep it oiled and use it. That's the best advice. Never allow oil to come in contact with the inner platter, idler wheel and motor capstan. This is where friction is required. Oil will cause unwanted slippage. Alcohol, or acetone works well. Oil in required areas is important, but is a disaster where it shouldn't be.
For shipping purposes, the speed shit spring will be disabled to prevent denting of the idler wheel and the power switch will be removed from the deck. Simply reattach the spring and place the switch back in the provided hole. I regret not offering this turntable outside the US, but shipping is a big problem. If you are outside the US and know someone stateside, you might want them to pick this item for you.
